Old World romantic dining at its finest, you’ll find exquisitely authentic German fare here, from herring salad to schnitzels to wurst. Try the wonderful signature dishes like the oven-roasted pork shank known as Schweinshaxe, or the regal Schnitzel a la King Ludwig II of Bavaria—milk-fed veal, simmered in a wine-mushroom artichoke cream sauce. The perfect complement are Linderhof’s quaffs from the Old Country, like their exclusive Weihenstephan draft, brewed since 1040 in Bavaria. Reservations recommended for parties of six or more. Full bar.
From the YUMMM! Restaurant Guide:
Restaurant Linderhof fills a unique niche on the Knoxville dining scene and fills it well. Offering Old World romantic dining at its finest, you’ll find exquisitely authentic German fare here, from Bavarian specialties to a large variety of schnitzels and wursts. The perfect complement are Linderhof’s quaffs from the Old Country, like their exclusive Weihenstephan draft, brewed since 1040 in Bavaria and only offered locally here.
Some people stop in to just sip a brew at the burnished, full-liquor wood bar, and sup on a bowl of goulash soup made from Old World Hungarian recipes. Or you can make it a full-blown occasion, reveling in a multi-course meal that includes the daily chef’s specials—a full rack of New Zealand lamb, for example, or smoked and roasted duckling.
Other marvels issuing forth from the “no-microwave” kitchen include wursts, schnitzels, and gorgeous, wonderful signatures like the 3 to 4 pound oven-roasted pork shank known as Schweinshaxe, or the regal Schnitzel King Ludwig of Bavaria—milk-fed veal, simmered in a wine-mushroom artichoke cream sauce, spatzle (noodle), Belgian carrots, sweet peas, and salad platter. The motto is, quite simply, “pan to hand,” and the dishes are something to savor.
Just as unique as the food is the ambiance. Step through the doors at Restaurant Linderhof and you’ve left East Tennessee behind. Chandeliers dangle from the ceiling, portraits of Bavarian royalty line the walls, and a barred wine cellar and gilt accents and warm lighting show everything to the finest advantage while dirndl-skirted servers step lively. There’s always a chance spontaneous accordion music will break out, and you’re bound to eat side-by-side with those who grew up eating just like this—Linderhof is a veritable melting pot of European nationals in East Tennessee.
Restaurant Linderhof is equal to any special occasion, but has its appeal as a place for regulars, too—the bar welcomes those who just need a pause in the day, perhaps to sip from the extensive Schnapps list, and a full dinner, and we’re talking soup, salad, and bread, with an entree starts at $11.
A congenial atmosphere, a fine meal, and good company keeps people coming back. Everything is made to order, so plan to relax and dine and enjoy, because there’s nowhere quite like Restaurant Linderhof.

Without a doubt one of the few Knoxville restaurants that could compete on a national or global scale. Authentic Bavarian cuisine that stands up to the best in Europe. Food prepared to order which ensures not only excellent quality but also allows for properly relaxed dining...there is actually time to savour the food and relax between courses. Yes, at busy times it may take a little longer but better that than bad food served fast. Snitzel, liverwurst brot, and any of the chef's specials standout (lamb shanks are a real winner). Prices are consistent with the quality. The servers and chef are both professional and yet friendly and enjoy conversing with the patrons without the artificial introductions that curse so many waitstaff. And while some may describe the interior as garish (red, purple and baroque interior - think cherubs and stern faced princes), it lends a unique ambiance that defies description and the opera music in the background completes the experience. The wine list leaves something to be desired, but you can bring your own for minimal ($10) corkage. Good German beers on tap. Also, a small bar that allows for a quick beer and the best goulash soup this side of the Black Forest. On a Global scale 8 out of 10. On a Knoxville scale 9 out of 10. Ya, das ist gut.
