The French Market uses both traditional and buckwheat batter mix shipped from France and cast-iron crêpe burners to make perfect crêpes, with all manner of luscious fillings, both sweet and savory. Have a made-to-order omelette for a tasty breakfast, or enjoy an imported croissant and a cup of flavorful Lavazza coffee for a quick snack. Now serving beer and hard cider.
From the Yummm! Restaurant Guide:
What has become one of Downtown Knoxville’s most popular restaurant and tourist attractions? The French Market Crêperie, but of course!
The Experience has been compared to “a trip to France without the airfare.” It begins outside with the covered patio, where cute Parisian tables and chairs invite you to sit under the umbrellas and watch the city go by, with classic French and jazz music playing in the background—then you open the door and the smell of sweet and savory crêpes cooking on the griddle envelopes your senses. Notice the décor, the artwork, the ambiance, and then the crowds of people inside: You have arrived to a unique dining experience found nowhere else in Knoxville.
The French Market Crêperie was created by owners Allen and Susan Tate, who spent several winters in Paris and wanted to replicate their experience of good food in a casual atmosphere at a great price, just like the great European tradition of “street food.” Now in their third year, the crêperie features over 40 sweet and savory crêpes along with baguette and croissant sandwiches and French pastries. Offering breakfast every day of the week, Saturday mornings, and all-day Sunday brunch is becoming a local tradition with the fancy French brunch menu of breakfast crêpes, sandwiches and omelettes, chocolate & almond croissants, and of course Lavazza coffee, the best selling espresso in Europe.
On the crêpe griddles, the Tates now have Chef Alex Baez, a four-year graduate of Le Cordon Bleu. He creates daily specials such as Salmon tar-tar, Turkey Breast & Brie with Honey roasted almonds, or the famous Parisian style Ham & Cheese with a fried egg on top. Alex, originally from Miami and of Cuban decent, is passionate about cooking—he’s developed a following who love his Burgundy and garlic mushrooms, caramelized French onion soup, savory roast beef crêpe with horseradish sauce, and his big smile and friendly personality. Most days at the counter you will find the manager Mollie Dembek, who will gladly help you make a decision of which savory and sweet crêpe to choose from. With the French Market Crêperie for over two years, Mollie is a friendly and outgoing professional with a bubbly personality.
The classic French crêpes are available everyday: cheese, Nutella, Crêpe Suzette, or ham, cheese, and butter on buckwheat—one of the many authentic touches that draw European customers and expats and their sophisticated Knoxville neighbors to the crêperie, again and again.
Open weeknight evenings and Friday and Saturday until 10 p.m., the French Market features live jazz every first and third Friday 7 p.m.-9 p.m. and offers a wide array of imported beers and hard ciders
