Steve Gilkey's 1984 Harley-Davidson XR1000
Wednesday, Dec. 2, 2009
"This is an ’84 XR1000, even though it’s stamped ’83. All the black ones were ’84s, almost at the very end of the run. They made less than 150 of the black ones, and they were offered to Harley dealers if they would take another grey one. Not many dealers could even sell the first grey XR, so there weren’t many black ones made. They were supposed to be this big sales success, but they weren’t. For that nine extra horsepower over the $3,995 Sportster, the XR1000 was $7,995." Full story »
Kenneth Winter's Streamliner
Thursday, Aug. 27, 2009
Kenneth Winter: I have this real weakness for a particular category on eBay: “car, other” and “motorcycle, other.” That’s where all the weird stuff is. It was described as a streamliner. I’d been wanting a rat bike of some sort, and this fit the bill. Full story »

When I moved back to Indiana in late 2003, I started college and heard about these crazy guys doing wheelies and stuff. So, since everyone I rode with seemed to be working when I was out of class, I’d go play out on the county roads. Before I knew it, I was the crazy guy everyone was talking about. In the Spring of 2005, Abate of Indiana had asked if I would come do an exhibition at one of their events; since then, I’ve been hooked. So I started Vertical Limits and started providing motorcycle stunt shows to about every event imaginable, thus taking me as far as China for over three months last year. Full story »

My uncle Bob and I rode together for about 20 years in Chicago—I lived in Chicago before I moved here to Tennessee. He was the uncle your mom and dad didn’t want you to hang out with, who got you your first beer, but I hung out with him anyway. He put me on my first Harley, and then he and I rode together for a long time after that. And when I moved to Tennessee, he said he would come down and ride the Tail of the Dragon with me on his ’86 FLHTC—it’s a classic, a Liberty Edition motorcycle. He had planned his trip, got new tires, got a new seat—but before he could leave Chicago, he passed away. Full story »

"So, the very next day I was at Biker Rags browsing around. I was talking to Jeff, the owner, about my experience with the RD just the day before and how I couldn’t believe how quick they are. He could tell I was obsessed." Full story »
Steve Gilkey Bought his Krauser New, Made it New Again

"It has about three parts left that are original. The frame is fully braced and has a Marzocchi fork from a Ducati 900SS. About the only part left of the original motor are the cases as it runs Krauser four-valve heads and Cosworth pistons—overbored to 1050." Full story »
David Ketterman and His Customized Hayabusa

Main goal: To customize a sport bike that turned people’s heads, but to still be able to enjoy riding the bike. The modifications changed the ride of the bike a little bit. You still can hit those top speeds, but when you turn it feels like turning a bus. Full story »
